CHAPTER THIRTEEN

“WHAT DO I PUT IN MY COVER

LETTER AND

THANK YOU

LETTER??”

A s Chris met with Ann, Raj and Carlos for their weekly meeting, everyone was curious to find out how Raj’s interview from the week before had gone.

Raj explained, “Well, it was not as good as I had hoped. The interview lasted about 10 minutes and the HR person only asked me a few basic questions and finished up the interview fairly quickly. I was very disappointed after the interview. I came home to my wife and told her what had happened and we were both sad. I couldn’t believe that it was so short. After all the preparation I had done and our role play from last week, I don’t get it. I did everything that you had suggested over the last two weeks, Chris.”

“I understand, Raj,” said Chris. “I think it depends on the interviewer and the position that you were being interviewed for. It may have been that the interviewer felt in the first few minutes that you weren’t going to be the right candidate for the role and just didn’t want to go further. I don’t know, it’s hard to say as I wasn’t there. I have seen 10 minute initial interviews go nowhere but other times I’ve also seen the candidate get asked back for another interview, but I don’t want to get your hopes up either. You had said that it wasn’t the right type of position for you last week, so maybe it’s a positive thing. If anything, you had a chance to practice your interview skills.”

“It was still upsetting…” said Raj, “but on the positive side, I do have another interview next week, so hopefully that one will be better.”

“It doesn’t sound like you had a good experience, but maybe next week’s interview will be better!” said Ann.

“It’s okay, Ann,” said Raj. “I guess it was a learning experience.”

“What should we talk about this week?” asked Chris.

“It’s my turn to make a request, if that’s okay, Chris?” Carlos asked. Chris nodded. “I’d like you to discuss cover letters and thank you letters Chris. First of all, I’m not exactly sure when to use them and what I should include in them.”

Raj added, “Hmm… I never thought about that. Should I send the person I met last week a thank you letter? What should I say?”

“All good questions,” said Chris. “Let’s talk about cover letters first. Cover letters should be one page in length and accompany a resume. They are a good way to address anything related specifically to the requirements of the position that you’re applying to, which may not be addressed in your resume. You can highlight things like how you worked on a project that was related to one of the specific requirements of the posting, or that you have similar industry experience.
